Madness of the Lambs part 1
- What up, Peter?
- I wonder if these towers would stand another attack. The aliens are getting stronger.
- Go take some sleep, I’ll take it from here.
- Alright. But be careful! We have only three sheep left.
- I will.
Peter took Jared’s advice and paced towards his house. It was a nice two-story house on the top of the hill. Peter had had abandoned it once before – back when the attacks started – but he then returned when they realized the only valuable thing for the aliens were the earth sheep.
Jared was standing alone in the middle of the corn field. The only noise was the quiet buzz of the ion tower. There was no wind. There were no aliens either. Not yet, at least.
He was 34 and once a software engineer. He was tall, skinny, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a khaki t-shirt and half a dozen grenades strapped around his belt. They had learnt the hard way the guns didn’t work against the aliens. Not that the grenades would do a lot of damage. If it weren’t for the towers they all would have been long dead.
The sheep were asleep. Maybe that was why the aliens had stopped coming. Jared wasn’t afraid though. Not since the scientists came up with the flame tower. It was so powerful he sometimes wondered why they even bother to build other towers. But that was not his call to make. He was just a spotter – when the boss decided to build a tower, it was his job to show the exact spot to the builders. And from time to time he had to redirect some of the towers so they would deal max damage. It wasn’t a hard job and he was happy with it.
As he was thinking about his responsibilities he fell asleep near the sheep. The aliens started the attack and the towers began firing. He had had heard these sounds so many times he didn’t wake up.
A half hour passed until someone finally woke up. It wasn’t Jared though. One of the sheep – the biggest one – stood up and smelled the air. It didn’t like the smell of napalm that early in the morning.
Our hero did not wake up even when the unthinkable happened – one of the aliens managed to go by the towers and reached the sheep. Either it was in a hurry or didn’t care cause it took Jared instead of a sheep. As they were slowly floating in the air heading towards the mothership Jared opened his eyes. And immediately closed them. He couldn’t believe what they were telling him. He tried one more time. Yes, it was true. He was indeed flying.
He looked down and for a few moments his heart was filled with pride – the towers looked amazing from up here. Then he remembered it were these same towers which failed to defend him tonight and he became angry. And just a bit afraid. He had never heard of anyone being captured by the aliens and taken to one of their spaceships. As far as they knew, aliens didn’t even see them – they could only see in sheep. Poor hungry aliens must had been desperate to take something else than a sheep to their ship. Damn flame towers! Jared tried to think about something else besides the various gruesome death-scenarios he had been playing in his head for the past 20 minutes, but he couldn’t. He looked up and saw the mothership fast approaching. It all will be over soon enough, he thought – one way or the other.
They finally arrived at the mothership and the shuttle just dropped Jared in a field. He was surprised at first but then he realized the drop point was sheep’s natural habitat. As far as his eyes could see there was nothing but grass. It was a fine grass too. It was a little strange that the aliens would go to such extent to make the sheep’s life more comfortable, but all became much clearer when Jared saw a sign that said „Lancaster meadows“ – apparently the aliens had just taken a huge chunk of earth and had put it there. Jared looked around. There was no one. Just grass and a distant sound of sheep bleating.
